Daniela Fritter is a career physical chemist who was drawn to creative writing and poetry later in life. She writes about emotionally complex themes from her personal life, with a journalistic eye, relatable language, and a dose of humor where possible. Her analytical style blends physical details, multiple perspectives, and timing to tell engaging and holistic stories.
Her first book, Downsizing Mom, is a memoir about coming to the realization that her mother is on the autistic spectrum while helping her move to a retirement community.
Daniela also writes narrative poetry about her mother’s progression into dementia. She’s a regular at the local open mic, and a couple of her poems have appeared in Peregrine.
Daniela was born in (West) Germany and immigrated to Southern California with her family when she was eight. Her English skills surpassed her German skills by the time she was a teenager. She has a B.S. in Chemistry from Cal State Fullerton, and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from UCLA. She works for a consumer products company in the Bay Area.
Daniela enjoys reading, wine, travel, and spending time with her three grown children and one grandchild. She is treasurer of the California Writers Club Tri-Valley Branch.
