Carpenter Bees and Writers by Lani Longshore

I nearly got creamed by a carpenter bee today. I was heading out to the back yard through the garage and she was intent on reaching the honeysuckle. She and I both flinched—I probably flinched more—but that was the extent of our interaction. It was a wonderful reminder that I should be as focused on my writing as the bee was on the blossoms.

Think about it. Here she was, buzzing along, and all of a sudden this huge obstacle appears out of nowhere. Did she panic? She did not. Did she stop? She did not. Did she despair that the honeysuckle was blocked from her forever? She did not. She kept on flying.

We can learn a lot about facing obstacles to our writing from that bee. There are times when a huge barrier will appear out of nowhere. If you keep on your path, it may flinch. Even if it doesn’t, stay as close to your path as you can to achieve your writing goals. There’s an amazing honeysuckle waiting for you, I promise.
